Outreach Counseling and Education

Resource Center of Somerset, provides individual counseling, community outreach & education programs, culturally sensitive programs and children services.

Individual Counseling

Based on the Strength Perspective and Empowerment model, counselors will meet with our clients regularly to provide an education around domestic violence and to help them explore their options. The primary goal of counseling is to help individuals become empowered to make their own choices and to trust their ability to make their own decisions.

Psycho-educational Group is designed to provide clients with further knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse and also to offer validation of their experiences. Psycho-education Group is offered in English and Spanish and consists of 8 sessions. The sessions cover a variety of topics including Power and Control, Cycle of Violence, setting a healthy boundary, healthy relationship, self-esteem and warning signs.

Support Groups are offered to those who are in need of additional support in an empowerment process. It is less structured than the psycho-educational group, that there is no set curriculum to follow or prescribed time limit. The group is about support among consistent group members and therapeutic process in a group setting.

Parent’s Support Group was created to fill the gap many victims who are parents experience who require further support with their parenting skills and other common concerns that are unique to families who experience domestic abuse.

All the groups are designed to empower victims while providing them with an opportunity to share their own experiences and hear about individuals with similar experiences. The support groups are offered to those who have attended individual counseling and or the psycho educational group. The support groups provide victims with additional emotional support while working through the effects of abuse.

Culturally Sensitive Programs

Our programs extend our outreach efforts to encompass frequently marginalized groups such as people of color, GLBT community (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered), and deaf, blind and disabled victims of domestic abuse.
Currently, we offer culturally specific domestic abuse services that include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Counseling, case management, and legal advocacy services available in Spanish, Japanese, and American Sign language (through an interpreter);
  • Services to help aid in the process of obtaining citizenship;
  • Individual/community enrichment services such as professional development (resume writing, computer skills) and parenting courses.
Through this program we are able to reach out to diverse communities and educate them about the impact that domestic abuse has on individuals, families, and the community as a whole; while informing them about the services we offer to help them combat this issue.

Children Services

Our children services provide individual and group therapy to children ages 3-17 affected by domestic violence. A mix of different expressive methods such as creative arts and talk therapy are used to develop rapport and provide a safe environment for children to begin the healing process from the effects of domestic violence.

Our group therapy sessions are curriculum-based focusing on topics relevant to domestic violence including but not limited to identifying and expressing feelings appropriately and healthy relationship building. We offer brief family sessions with the non-offending parent and encourage non-offending parent participation.
